FAQs

No. This program is only open to current engineering students with sophomore or junior standing.

Unfortunately, HYPER participants need to commit to all 10 weeks of activities. Only in extremely rare circumstances can the start or end dates be shifted.

Participants are selected based on their interests, motivation, and, if applicable, experience. These factors, along with the applicant’s ranked preferences, are considered in determining a match to a particular mentor/project.

The benefits that you receive as a result of this program are not in exchange for services provided by you. The UCF Tax Department has reviewed the benefits made to REU participants and has determined that these benefits are to enable the participant to pursue their studies or research. Therefore, for tax purposes, these benefits are considered by the university to be scholarship or fellowship grants as defined by Treasury Regulation §1.117-3. As a result, the university has no tax reporting obligation per Treasury Regulation §1.6041-3(n).

Absolutely not! We are excited to invite excellent students, regardless of prior research experience.

HYPER provides on-campus housing at UCF for the duration of the program. Students will live in private-bedroom apartments (two to four individual bedrooms that share a kitchen, living room, etc.).

Yes. Transportation is provided for all REU activities and UCF runs regular shuttles throughout the surrounding communities, but there will be plenty of time to explore all Central Florida has to offer. UCF parking permits are approximately $70 for the duration of the program.

UCF is located on the east side of Orlando, approximately 20 minutes from Downtown Orlando, 40 minutes from Disney and Universal, and an hour from the beach.

Unfortunately, HYPER can only provide relocation, housing, and meal per diem to participants whose universities are located greater than 75 miles from UCF’s main campus.
